Dear Holden
By Kathleen Maree'

Publication Date: December 15th 2022
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

It all started with a letter.

This letter I am now holding in shaky hands that I must have read at least a dozen times already. A letter I felt compelled to retrieve from the public trashcan after that woman all but tossed it away. I know it was none of my business. It was wrong, and I know that. But after suffering through the kinds of loss that I had, my gut insisted that whoever took the time to write down their words didn’t deserve them to be left in the trash like they didn’t matter.

Because they should matter.

What’s the big deal right? It’s just a letter…

But the problem was, my name wasn’t Daphne.

And I wrote a letter back.

Where the Rainbow Falls
By Joey Jones

Publication Date: August 20th 2022
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance, Suspense

In the face of a storm, a father’s love is the most powerful force.

With Hurricane Florence rapidly approaching the North Carolina coastline, all Niles North can think about is his five-year-old son Riley and how he wished he bent the law when he had the chance to evacuate him. Now, instead of being safe in Hickory with his dad, Riley is with Niles’s ex-wife Eden, who’s decided to ride out the storm at home with her drummer friend. Desperate to get back to his son as the stormwaters rise, Niles begs Reese, an attractive police detective and rescue worker, to drive him back to New Bern.

Refusing to help Niles seems nearly impossible for Reese who quickly realizes she’s in deeper than she should be—both professionally and emotionally—especially since she’s drawn to almost everything about him. As the two undertake a perilous journey into the eye of the storm, Niles’s worst fears come true, setting in motion a series of events that will change both of their lives forever.

♥ EXCERPT

His cheeks lifted as his eyes bubbled over. “He’s out there somewhere and we’re in here, doing nothing.”

“We’re waiting out the worst of this storm so that we can do something,” she reminded him all the while realizing the inadequacy of the response.

“What if I never see my son again?” Niles considered out loud through a sniffle.

At that instant, Reese’s emotions controlled her body and before she knew it, tears streamed down her chapped cheeks. The wind took a toll on them although she hadn’t realized it until standing beneath the showerhead earlier thinking about what the wind could be doing to a vulnerable five-year-old. She’d thought about having kids one day, hoped to, but this was one of those moments in life where something clicked and she knew she wanted to know the kind of love this man felt for his child. Even though this was literally one of the saddest moments she’d ever experienced, Niles’s love for Riley radiated off him like the scent of a breathtaking bouquet of flowers.

Letting go, Reese draped her arms over his shoulders and hugged him tightly. “I’ll do everything in my power to make sure you get to hold Riley in your arms again,” she whispered into his ear. It was relatively dark in their little nook, and the moment she decided that one of them would hear if anyone approached, she let her lips settle on his cheek and rested them there as she squeezed a bit tighter.

Niles’s eyelids collapsed as the warmth of Reese’s body spread across his own like a fire jumping from one house to the next. He could feel the moisture on her lips as they lingered on his face tracing his skin like a tender massage. There was something he loved about her confidence, something about her touch that set him at ease even while the inside of his body screamed at the top of its lungs. He wanted out of here, wanted to fight the storm and all of his demons together with this woman whom he barely knew. She was strong yet soft, forceful yet calm. He never met anyone like Reese Kirby in all his life, and he couldn’t help but think God sent her to him at just the right time. A piece of him wanted to be selfish and wonder what tomorrow might hold for the two of them, but all he could think about at the moment was how grateful he was that she was willing to risk her life to help him find his son.

Somehow, eventually, Niles and Reese both fell asleep beneath separate blankets. Under an extra sheet Reese plucked from the pile earlier, their fingers hid intertwined like two strands of rope. Staring at one another, they whispered until neither of them could hold their eyes open any longer. Reese thought Niles would never let his body rest, but she made a pact with herself to talk to him until he did. She knew his mind wouldn’t wander as much if she could keep a conversation streaming. In a way, it felt like they were in the boat again, and as she drifted off to sleep, Reese couldn’t help but think about how hiding seemed to be their thing.

The Girl from Portofino by Siobhan Daiko #HistoricalFiction

The Girl from Portofino
By Siobhan Daiko

Publication Date: 30th December 2021
Publisher: Asolando Books
Page Length: 300 Pages
Genre: Women’s Historical Fiction/29th Century Historical/World War 2 Historical

In 1970 Gina Bianchi returns to Portofino to attend her father’s funeral, accompanied by her troubled twenty-four-year-old daughter, Hope. There, Gina is beset by vivid memories of World War 2, a time when she fought with the Italian Resistance and her twin sister, Adele, worked for the Germans.

In her childhood bedroom, Gina reads Adele’s diary, left behind during the war. As Gina learns the devastating truth about her sister, she’s compelled to face the harsh brutality of her own past. Will she finally lay her demons to rest, or will they end up destroying her and the family she loves?

A hauntingly epic read that will sweep you away to the beauty of the Italian Riviera and the rugged mountains of its hinterland. “The Girl from Portofino” is a story about heart-wrenching loss and uplifting courage, love, loyalty, and secrets untold.

Excerpt

Gina’s heels tip-tapped on the tiled marble floor as she approached the corner table in the Magnifico’s Terrazza Restaurant. Six tedeschi officers. She groaned to herself. The Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS were using the hotel as a rest and recreation centre, billeting their top brass in the seventy rooms and suites. Gone were the days when she would serve illustrious visitors here. Since the German occupation had begun six months ago, the hotel had been occupied by people whom she could only describe as “pigs”.

Tonight’s “pigs” were well on their way to a state of complete drunkenness. They’d started with negroni cocktails in the bar, followed by glass after glass of Vermentino white wine to accompany their meal.

Delicious food they’d barely touched so intent had they been on drinking. She’d served them Chef’s signature Pansoti in Salsa di Noci—ravioli filled with herbs and vegetables in a walnut sauce—and a main course of Scaloppa di Branzino con Pinoli e Olive—roasted sea bass with olives and pine nuts. She was hungry—she was always hungry these days—and it made her fume when she saw how much food the officers had left on their plates.

Gina suppressed a sigh. There was a ration system in Portofino, but seldom were there the goods available to fulfil it. Babbo and the other fishermen did what they could to satisfy the hunger of the inhabitants, but after the nazifascisti had appropriated more than their fair share, and others had purchased any surplus on the black market, the local population were only left with scraps. Gina would have loved to have eaten her fill in the Magnifico’s restaurant. Instead, she had to be content with the bowl of plain pasta provided for staff at the beginning of their shifts.

The guttural German language echoed from the other tables; the restaurant was full tonight. Gina juggled her tray with dexterity as she placed a decanter and six brandy glasses on the crisp, white tablecloth. Amazonian in stature, her body was strong, her calves ribbons of muscle from walking and cycling, her hips and arms firm from swimming. But that didn’t stop the tedeschi from considering her “fair game”.

As she bent to clear the table, she felt the black skirt of her hotel uniform tighten across the soft flesh of her buttocks. Then, out of the blue, a hand came down and gave her bottom a squeeze.

She leapt back with a growl, and a plate crashed to the floor.

Six sets of glazed, drunken eyes roamed over her. The officers, fair-haired, blue-eyed, dressed in their identical navy uniforms, all looked alike. Except for one. A livid scar ran down the left-hand side of his face. He lurched drunkenly to his feet, stepped towards her, and grinned lasciviously.

‘Bella signorina,’ he slurred, grabbing her around the waist and aiming a wet kiss at her lips. ‘You want a good time?’ He chuckled. ‘I’ll show you a good time.’

‘No grazie,’ she squirmed from his grasp, her skin crawling with revulsion. She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand.

The despicable man’s fellow-officers laughed uproariously, as if it was the funniest sight they’d ever witnessed.

Mortified, Gina picked up the broken plate, then straightened her shoulders. She gripped her tray tightly and turned on her heel.

The tedeschi clinked their glasses behind her, ‘Heil Hitler,’ they chorused before bursting into an inebriated song.

Es ist so schoen Soldat zu sein

Officers at the other tables contributed their voices raucously as Gina left the dining room, anger fizzing in her chest. If she hadn’t been carrying a tray, she might well have made her favourite rude sign at them, damn the consequences.

Hands held out at waist level. Thumbs stuck out and index fingers spaced away from each thumb. The gesture literally meant, “I'll kick you so hard your arse cheeks will end up this far apart.” Gina smirked to herself. She’d always been told she was the rougher of the twins. But she was a fisherman’s daughter; she wouldn’t think of pretending otherwise. Her language and gestures were those of her environment; she’d never take on airs and graces like Adele.

After carrying the tray through to the kitchen, she went to look for her best friend, Stefano.

She found him in the break room, smoking a Macedonia cigarette. He only needed to glance at her to understand what had just happened. ‘Did one of those maiali, pigs, try it on?’ he snarled.

Tonight wasn’t the first time Gina had been groped by a German. Many of the tedeschi seemed to believe they had “lord’s rights” over the female staff. A few of her workmates had agreed to the so-called “good time” in return for extra rations for their families. Gina gritted her teeth; she would never say yes to a Nazi; doing so would go against everything she believed about herself. She might be street wise, but she wasn’t a street slut.

‘I coped,’ she told Stefano. ‘But I don’t think I can take much more of having to fend off those pigs. Tonight I really wanted to fight back.’

Stefano raked a hand through his thick, chestnut brown hair. His gaze darted around the room before it settled on her. ‘I’ve been called up to serve in Mussolini’s Army.’ He paused. ‘I’d rather boil my head in oil than become a repubblichino.’

She reached across the space between them and gave him a quick hug. He was tall—over six foot—and his wide cheekbones and finely chiselled jaw gave him an almost too-handsome-to-be-real appearance. Her friends fancied him like crazy, but she loved him like she loved her brother. ‘What will you do?’ she asked.

‘I’ve decided to join the partigiani in the mountains.’ He gave her an encouraging smile. ‘Why don’t you come with me? They need girls like you to act as stafette.’

She helped herself to a cigarette from the precious pack he’d bought on the black market; they always shared their cigs. ‘I’m too fierce to be a simple messenger, you know I am.’ Gina’s physical prowess meant she could hold her own against most boys her age. ‘I’d want to be treated like one of the men.’

Stefano barked out a laugh. ‘I’m sure they’ll agree to have you, once they know what you’re like,’ he winked.

They sat in silence, smoking. Gina wondered how her parents would react when she told them she was leaving home.

Not just leaving home. But leaving to become a freedom fighter.

The thought of it sparked a thrill of anticipation deep in her belly.

She checked her watch. ‘Our shift is over. Let’s go.’

1066 Turned Upside Down

Genre: Alternative History

Have you ever wondered what might have happened if William the Conqueror had been beaten at Hastings in 1066? Or if Harald Hardrada had won at Stamford Bridge? Or if Edward the Confessor had died with an heir ready to take his crown? If so – here is the perfect set of short stories for you.

1066 Turned Upside Down explores a variety of ways in which that momentous year could have played out very differently.

Written by nine well-known authors the stories will take you on a journey through the speculative ‘what ifs?’ of England’s most famous year in history.

Excerpt

Emperor Of The North
by Joanna Courtney

Harald Hardrada, renowned Viking warrior and King of Norway, had two important ‘right-hand men’ – Lords Halldor and Ulf. They seem to have been with him from his early years as a Varangian mercenary and were a key part of his stable rule of Norway from 1047. Halldor returned to his homeland of Iceland in 1051, but Ulf remained as Harald’s High Commander until he died in early 1066, just before the invasion of England.

Was it, I wondered, the lack of this level-headed commander that led to Harald making what must be one of the only tactical mistakes of his prestigious military career in turning up at Stamford Bridge with only half his army, and they not in full armour? This story, told by Aksel, imaginary son of Lord Halldor, explores that possibility and the effect it might have had on England if Norwegian Harald had defeated English Harold in 1066.

It was a fine year, 1066 – a year to be sung to the rafters of the mead halls, a year to hail the crowning of a mighty king: Harald Hardrada, Emperor of the North. Not that I ever doubted he would do it. None of us did.

Harald had been a king long before 1066 and a fine one. They didn’t call him Hardrada – Ruthless – for nothing. He’d won Norway in 1047 and held her for nigh-on twenty years before he challenged for England. I should know, for I was born in his war camp, son to his trusted friend Lord Halldor of Myvatyn, and was passed to Harald for luck as soon as my cord was cut. I followed him from that moment.

Let me introduce myself – Aksel Halldorson, Earl of Wessex and Commander of the King’s troops either side of the Narrow Sea, though I am little use in that office these days, being more or less confined to my bed since the summertime of this year of our Lord, 1086. I am but two and fifty – almost the age Harald was in 1066 – but I have some disease that is wasting away my bones.

‘They said we were mad!’ That’s how my father used to tell the events of 1066. ‘They said we could never take England, that she would be too strong for us – but we sailed on her anyway.’

He was always one for the drama in a tale, Lord Halldor, and he liked to make out the expedition was harder than it was, but in truth no one said that we were mad – they just said, ‘show us the path’. Vikings, even these days, are ever keen to take to the whale road and men were summoning their crews the moment Edward died and Harald spoke of England. We were wild enough to yearn for battle and arrogant enough to believe we could seize England, the jewel in Europe’s crown – a land so sure of itself that all men longed to hold it. Earl Harold longed, for sure, Duke William too, but God did not choose them. God chose Harald Hardrada of Norway and Harald has paid Him back with twenty years of security and prosperity for his people.

So how, in this alternative story did Hardrada win at Stamford Bridge? Read 1066 Turned Upside Down and find out!

Excerpt

The walk to the barn heightens my tension with every step. The girls are giddy. They whisper to each other about men and marriage. Hope and excitement. The sun beats down on my skin, a soft breeze fluttering a loose curl in my face. I stop to fix it, holding myself in the still afternoon where a hummingbird rattles its wings, feeding on a field thistle.

Promises.

“Come, Mademoiselle Colette. Do not dawdle,” the Sister says.

With a deep inhale of the warm air, I step into the barn. The other girls are lined up along the long wall, equal distance apart, as the nuns fuss with their dresses, their hair, and pinch their cheeks into a rosy blush.

I take my place. Dust particles float in the air, the scent of moist wood and hay lingers. My heart races and I can still hear that hummingbird beat its wings, ready to take flight.

“Now girls, the men will be here shortly. You will meet with each one of them, converse for five minutes, then we will move them along to the next girl, and the next. If at any point, you wish to choose one, step forward and alert us.”

“What happens then?” Louise asks.

“There’s a notary waiting in the next room. Once you sign your contract, you’re free to start your new life.”

Just like that. You choose a man from a crowd. A stranger who doesn’t know your past, your fears. Your scars.

“Isn’t this exciting,” a young girl says to me.

I force a smile.

The doors open. A crowd of men with wide eyes remove their hats, peeking over each other’s shoulders to gawk at the barn full of marriageable women.

The nuns lead the first group to spots marked in the dirt, a few feet in front of each of us.

A man stands before me. When he smiles, all I can see is the gaping hole where his front teeth should be.

“Hello, Mademoiselle.”

“Hello.”

He says his name, where he lives, and the size of his plot. I don’t focus on his words. All I can see is the dark cavern in his mouth.

Next.

A man with a flowing mane of facial hair that reminds me of a horse’s tail. It’s probably as dirty as one, too.

Then a man old enough to be my grandfather. He tears up discussing his late wife and I soften to him. Until he asks if I would like to take his wife’s place. The washing is so difficult to manage.

I hold back a very deep sigh.

A man who fidgets and scratches at his temple as he stutters out his name. Then the name of his friend. He peeks out a field mouse from his pocket as twitchy as him.

Louise screeches when she glimpses the little creature.

Two nuns hurry over and hook his arms. They lead him away as one says, “Monsieur, we told you not to bring the mouse.”

My hand covers my mouth, stifling a laugh, then a cough to cover my outburst. I gather myself, smiling to greet the next settler.

Coming home has never been so thrilling … or deadly.

When New York Times Bestselling author, Arden Chasing, returns home to Honeysuckle Island to attend a diamond exhibition held at The Oliver Hotel, she soon finds herself embroiled in a perplexing mystery that involves the charming and charismatic Garrett Singleton, a known jewel thief.

As the mystery deeps and danger closes in, Arden fears she might lose something even more valuable than the celebrated pink Finkle diamond—her heart.

Arden liked seeing herself through Crew’s eyes. She got the feeling that he actually appreciated that she was so outspoken.

The moment slowed as the air took on a charge of energy. Arden was keenly aware that the two of them were alone. She didn’t know how Crew could pass himself off as not being exciting. He was the most thrilling man she’d ever been around. His eyes took on a smolder as he scooted closer. Her breath caught as her pulse bumped up several notches. Was she ready to kiss him? This was happening fast. She wanted a whirlwind romance, but at the same time, she wanted something lasting. Was Crew the type of guy who would get bored with her if she made things too easy for him? He was so charming and charismatic that she got the impression that he’d broken many hearts. She didn’t want to be another number.

“I don’t know how much help I can be with the Carmel research part of your book, but if you need any help with the romance, I’m happy to oblige.” He caressed the curve of her jaw with the side of his finger, rippling pleasure through her. “I’m glad our paths crossed,” he murmured. His fingers trailed lightly down her arm, igniting her cells.

He leaned closer, his eyes roving over her with a hunger that stoked an aching yearning in her. Her lips parted instinctively as her breath came faster. He leaned in. Thankfully, before their lips could connect, her good sense took over. She placed her index finger on the center of his lips.

His eyes widened in surprise.

“No kissing tonight,” she said gently. “We need to get to know one another better first.” Oh, how she hated saying those words. Her head argued that she’d acted wisely, but her traitorous body longed to be held in his arms. She wanted to discover the taste of his lips … to run her fingers through his thick mop of blond hair. She wanted to be consumed by him. Wow. That was good. She needed to put those words down on paper … err, her computer screen before they flew out of her head.

He drew back as if disappointed, a tight smile winding over his lips. “That’s what you call a crash and burn.”

She laughed in surprise. “No, it’s called being sensible. You’re way too charming for your own good.”

“Nah,” he winked. “I’m just your everyday, average architectural consultant.”

She gave him a reproving look. “Uh, no. I don’t buy that for one minute. We may be just getting to know one another, but I’m no idiot. You, Crew Bronson, are a Casanova. And no matter how enchanting and handsome you are, I’m going to do the sensible thing and protect my heart.”

Amusement overtook his expression. “Sensibility is overrated.”

“Not in my book.”

A resplendent smile waffled over his lips. “You are the author. I guess you’ll have to be the one who decides how our story will end.”

“I guess you’re right.” She pressed her lips together, studying him. “We’ll start by going sailing in the morning … and then we’ll see.”
