What if your whole world was a lie?
I have to admit, I am a big fan of Veronica Roth. If you have been anywhere near a cinema recently then you may well have heard of the Divergent series. Today I am going to review Allegiant, which is the thrilling conclusion of the Number 1 New York Times bestseller, Divergent.Allegent has been out since 2013, but its cover has recently had a makeover and I thought I might as well review it while I am revealing the cover.
If you have seen the movies and not read the books - read the books. The casting for Divergent was sublime, but they missed out a great deal of the story.
Of all the Divergent books I think Allegiant is my favourite. For those of you who don't know the story I shall outline it very briefly...
Imagine a world that is centered around one city - the only city that still exists in the whole world - the rest having been destroyed by war. In order to avoid war again, the population of the city are put into factions - depending on their skills and their scores in a test.
Tris Prior's does not fit into any one of the factions, she fits in to all of them. She is, what is called, a divergent. A rarity. A danger to the rest of society. She must not reveal to anyone what she really is.
She joins Dauntless - a type of police force - and here she falls in love with her instructor, Tobias, or Four as he is more commonly known - he also happens to be a divergent...well, maybe??
But the world they know is about to come to a dramatic end. Everything they thought they knew turns out to be a lie. They were told there was nothing beyond the fence that circled the city, but that is not true. Maybe if she and Tobias travel beyond the fence they will find a world of peace where they can build a new life together, forever.
But beyond the fence is the truth. The truth about the world and the truth about Tris's mother. The truth is almost harder to believe than the lie and it has far deadlier consequences.
What did I think of the story?
What I love about these books is that Tris is so believable. She struggles with who she is, what she sees and what she does, throughout the story. She is a young woman, who has to battle the most extraordinary circumstance and she does all of this with bravery and grace. She always put herself last, thinking of everybody else first. She is an incredibly strong heroine, but she has such a generous and big heart that you can not help but like her.
Roth weaves the most spellbinding tale. From the very first page she draws her readers in and keeps them engaged right until the end. Her writing is extraordinary. All the books are written in the first person - everything from Tris's perspective, but in Allegiant we hear things from Four's point of view as well as Tris's, which make this story all the more riveting. There is no happy-ending in this book. It isn't a fairy-tale. I was crying by the end of it, that is how moving Roth's writing is.
I would thoroughly recommend this series. The writing is superb, the story line is fantastic and the characters will find a place in your heart. Check out the books, because you don't want to miss this story.
