Book Review - Crimson Tides - Daath Chronicles #YA @ElizaTilton

was introduced to Eliza Tilton's, Daath Chronicles when I received an ARC of Wicked Path - Book 2 of the series - from the publishers.  By Chapter 3 of Wicked Path, I knew I had found yet another favourite Young Adult author. So when I was offered an ARC for the next book in the series, I was more than a little excited.

Back in Lakewood Avikar finally learns the truth about his father—and the lies he’s been told since birth. Since King Corban doesn’t believe his tale about the shapeshifters, it falls to Avikar to find a way to route out the beasts from the lands and stop them once and for all.

Lucino has left Jeslyn in Mirth to go fight the Kuuni. When he arrives on the black shores, ready to slaughter them all, he finds that killing is no longer as easy as before. His human side is becoming stronger, and the repercussions of his love for Jeslyn will put his race and every plan he's ever made at risk.

In Book Three of the Daath Chronicles, two very different boys will discover who they thought they were is nowhere close to the truth, and sacrificing themselves is the only way to save the world they love.

What did I think?

Crimson Tides holds nothing back. Chapter 1 and – BANG! - you are back in the actions…back in the story.

This book, I felt, was a lot grittier than the previous, and at times, it is very dark. I found myself holding my breath on various occasions and it certainly kept the pages turning.

Like the other books in the series, the story is told in the first person and swaps between the four protagonists. This really drove the story forward and was very cleverly executed.

Last time I said I didn’t have a favourite character and I enjoyed reading about them all, but this time, for me, Jeslyn and her relationship with Lucino, really took this book from good to a whole different level of brilliance. I review a lot of Young Adult fiction that focus on relationships, but the relationship between Jeslyn and Lucino leaves the others I have read in the shade. Their relationship is so complicated - they are from opposing sides and their people are at war with each other. They should not be together and yet, they are, and they love each other and they sacrifice so much to stay together. Lucino is bound by duty, but he proves, time and time again, that Jeslyn is the most important person in his world. And yes, there are some things he cannot control, but his love for her never wavers. He would fight to the death for her. But at the same time, Jeslyn is not some helpless female who needs protecting. She is strong and intelligent and knows her own mind. She is a fantastic roll model for our teenage girls.

To get the most out of this book, you really need to start at the beginning of the series with Broken Forest - I would not recommend reading them out of order - you would be lost and I fear, stay lost if you read Crimson Tides first.  But it is well worth the investment of your time to read these books. I genuinely love this series and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for quality young adult science-fiction. You will not be disappointed.
